EXHIBITION | HOME GROWN by Iriée Zamblé
27 November – 17 December
Opening from 12:00-17:00 hours

Finishing a two-year residency period at the Hamburger Community of Art, Iriée Zamblé challenges herself to transform the exhibition space of Roodkapje for her solo exhibition HOME GROWN. Not only by including new paintings, but also by making several murals made specifically for the exhibition. The title of this exhibition is as much about a sense of belonging in African Diasporic cultures and Zamblé’s bi-continental background in the perspective of Afro-Europeanism, as it is about her development during her time in Rotterdam. Including paintings, wall and floor, Zamblé carefully constructs an environment that embodies her artistic premise, while transforming the exhibition space into a home for the protagonists of her work.

In HOME GROWN, Zamblé continues to entice her audience with her cool and colourful, dignified paintings of people from the African Diasporas. Drawing from those she meets on the streets, friends and acquaintances, the people appearing in Zamblé’s paintings are signified by an air of coolness. Focussing on the details of their appearance, she makes them into bold and authentic figures, painting them with a sharp eye for style and self-expression. Often looking directly at the spectator, the painted subjects claim their own space, expressing control and ownership, as Zamblé shapes our collective perspective on Black consciousness.

Until December 17 at Roodkapje Rotterdam.
