Join us for the Big Reveal of Roodkapje’s exhibition anarchief, or, the spirit of Happenings transformed
With works and contributions by Alice Strete, Philippa Driest, Iris van Velzen, Maoyi Qiu, Samboleap Tol, Sandim Mendes and the Hamburger Community (Irene Cassarini, Julia Wilhelm, M.C. Julie Yu, Repelsteeltje and Tisa World). Come for the tour guided by Roodkapje's curator Wan Ing Que, hang out, meet the artists / anarchivists and witness the performances that will activate the anarchive on a #cosmic and #historical level.

Some of you may be confused, because the exhibition has been open since May 2024. You can read more about it here. Those who have visited may have had a strange sense of the expo space feeling like.. empty? underdeveloped? Many have asked the question: What’s up with that anarchive? Where’s the art? Who are the artists? The thing is, to transform Happenings into anarchival pieces proves to be a pretty nonlinear and unpredictable process. It’s difficult to grasp in your usual design, communication and production rhythms. The Art, Life Anarchive summer school in August 2024 was a first attempt to understand anarchival practice and things have been growing, disintegrating, adapting and reforming since then. Happenings been Happening (thank you Hamburger Community!!). We've been figuring it out.

Five amazing artists accepted the challenge of becoming an anarchivist. They took their personal experiences of a Happening and translated it through their respective practices into the anarchival pieces. Since our anarchive is a celebration of subjectivity, it has been a pleasure to watch the special flavors each artist brought to the table. Although each uniquely to their own, what these artistsshare is a thoughtful, careful and especially intuitive way of working in which relationality and association play important roles. Ingredients for anarchival attitudes slowly emerge and inspire the anarchivists to come.

After months of presence in absence, shimmers, shadows and promises, this is it: Roodkapje’s anarchive in its first, stable-for-a-little-while form, that is at the same time its final form at het Delftseplein. We warmly invite you to the anarchive's grand reveal.

We are happy! We are proud! Come celebrate with us!

About the artists:

Philippa Driest is an artist and initiator of KIOSK Rotterdam. Her practices revolve around topics of maintenance, community and distribution. In her work she explores different sites of contamination and leakage through publishing and research installations.

Maoyi Qiu lives and works in the Netherlands, their practice predominantly revolves around concepts of ephemeral communication, autonomy & anonymity, and somatic interdependency. These themes are often examined through the mediums of video, sound installations, and performance.

Alice Strete is an artist, researcher and chef in training. She’s interested in the intricate relationship between humans and the technologies they surround themselves with. Her work involves collaborative self-organising practices, publishing, and cooking, and explores topics from feminist technologies to the socio-politics of food. She is a member of the Varia collective and the BioBulkBende food co-operative.

Samboleap Tol creates interactive installations and performances that delve into the postcolonial diasporic psyche, with a focus on psychological inheritance. Her practice is deeply influenced by Khmer spiritual beliefs, shaped by Theravada Buddhism, centuries of Hindu-Buddhist influence, Southern Chinese diasporic expressions of faith, and Indigenous Khmer spirituality. Ancestral veneration, in particular, forms the cornerstone of her thinking.

Sandim Mendes is a Cape Verdean artist born and raised in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. She produces work that deals with the intersecting layers of personal and political histories, exploring the concept of identity within and between cultures. She thinks in images and creates new histories rooted in inherited memories and embodied intuitions. Through photography, performances, textile, drawings, printmaking and installations, she expresses her findings.
