Roodkapje x Rotown present
mui zyu
Support: Maya Weber
for fans of: Beach House, Grimes, Jay Som, Japanese Breakfast
mui zyu’s music exudes an evocative and experimental essence, characterized by burbling percussion and unnerving textures. Rooted in Chinese folklore, her compositions feature delicate piano melodies enveloped in distorted sounds, forming a fragile framework that encapsulates mui zyu’s narrative. Through sticky synths and a lullaby-like melody, Mui skilfully crafts a comforting and introspective ambiance, ushering the listener into an alternate realm woven from her personal fantasies and boundless imagination.
‘On her debut solo album, Rotten Bun for an Eggless Century, mui zyu explores her heritage and grapples with otherness in knotty electro-pop shot through with field recordings and traditional Chinese instruments’, the renowned Pitchfork wrote, and it couldn’t be more true. mui’s sophomore isn’t far away, and we did get a little taste already with her latest single Everything To Die For, a spacey, laid back track that gravitates more towards a combination of indierock and slowcore. We are excited, and you should be too, because if one thing is for certain, it’s that zyu will surprise us once again.
Maya Weber will be the opening act for mui zyu. This Rotterdam artist finds her passion in writing, playing and producing music. Maya gets her inspiration from recognizable situations she experiences as a young adult. In her songs she likes to experiment with different synths, guitar riffs and drum patterns to give an exact expression to how she feels. “When I make music, I find myself in a world that I never want to leave”.
