SYMPA-SYMPOSIUM

so happy together
sympa-symposium

Participating collectives: Jatiwangi art Factory, SOUPSPOON Collective, The Post Collective, Questions Collective, De Onkruidenier, One Field Fallow, Take-A-Way, Reading Room Rotterdam, Singing Club Rotterdam, Art Worldbuilding

Join us for a day at the sympa-symposium, a symposium like no other! The culminating event of the 'so happy together' programme, where we explore collaboration, collectivity and communal experience through experimental cooking, eating and digestion.

Take part in workshops, conversations, exercises and spend time together over some delicious shared meals. Expect sambal making, glitter genitalia, wild fermentation, vocal stimulation, engaging conversations, informal mingling, and much more.

The sympa-symposium is for anyone interested in collaboration and collective practices, whether you've been working in a collective for years, are thinking of starting one, or are just curious. It is a day to meet other collectives, engage with their ways of working and share experiences.

so happy together
Over the past few months we have been exploring collective practices and collaboration in a series of public evenings. On each of these three evenings, collectives were invited to share their ways of working through experimental cooking and sharing food. We actively explored questions such as: How to build a healthy community? What does it take to be hospitable? How can we find ways of collective self-determination? How can we live and work together with more than human collaborators?

During this sympa-symposium we invite all participants of the so happy together programme back to Roodkapje to delve deeper into these questions. What support structures can collective practices foster as alternatives to established power dynamics? How can this be done within institutions?

The sympa-symposium doesn't take the form of a regular conference with panel discussions, but is a moment to meet and share practices, experiences and struggles, while putting kindness and mutual solidarity at the centre. It is a day of active and collective learning, together with the public.

WORKSHOPS:

Jatiwangi Art Factory:
Jatiwangi art Factory will hold a workshop on making sambal geprek (mashed sambal), a popular side dish in Indonesia that serves as a metaphor for Jatiwangi art Factory's community practice.

SOUPSPOON Collective:
Born out of fragmented communication across different time zones, SOUPSPOON will facilitate an introvert-friendly corner for people who want to share some time/space to rest, meditate or simply daydream.

The Post Collective:
The Post Collective will host a collective reading of 'PAACT' (PAPERLESS ART ALLIANCE CON-TRACT), which offers a set of mutually agreed conditions for working within and beyond the collective.

Questions Collective:
Questions Collective will be facilitating 'DIY Genitals', a workshop where you are invited to make your own temporary genitals out of glitter, plastic and other colourful materials. The workshop is a body positive celebration of genital diversity.

De Onkruidenier:
In an experimental tasting workshop, de Onkruidenier will explore new relationships between plant and product, body and landscape.

One Field Fallow:
To draw attention to the immediate surroundings of the Roodkapje area and its impending urban transformation, One Field Fallow fermented locally harvested produce. In this workshop ritual, the fermented goods will be handed back to the community in and around Roodkapje.

Take-A-Way:
Take-A-Way uses the ritual of making coffee to bring together people, stories and products. A variety of coffees and snacks will be served throughout the day.

Reading Room Rotterdam:
Reading Room Rotterdam will provide a cosy reading corner with independent publications and collectively produced zines from their nomadic library.

Singing Club Rotterdam:
Before and after the conversations and workshops, Singing Club Rotterdam will exercise the vocal cords in collective exercises.

Art Worldbuilding:
Art Worldbuilding will present collectively produced zines that bring together the results of the three previous 'so happy together' evenings.

PLANNING

The so happy together sympa-symposium consists of two parts: a day programme of talks, workshops and interventions, including lunch and dinner.

For those who can't make it during the day, there will be flash summaries of the workshops and presentations of the results during the evening programme. We will use the results of the workshops to activate a collective conversation among all participants. What can sambal tell us about hosting? How do makeshift genitals change collaborations? How can we taste our environment? What provisional and practical conclusions can we draw about how to be so happy together? Finally, we'll channel all the day's input through our vocal cords and join in a group singing session with Singing Club Rotterdam.
