What’s Inside the ATM?

What's Inside the ATM?
Everything. All of it. What stars in the dirt? What stars?

On the 9th of December Hamburger Community residents Viana Afoumou (vixnde), Maja Simišić and NDNMK Solutions and special guest S✫an D. Henry-Smith come together with mentor-artist Geo Wyex to show us ‘What’s Inside the ATM?’.

A rotational presentation working with sound and poetry, responding to a series of prompts on value, identity, memory, time and indeterminacy.
The ATM - what could it mean? A Tired Melody - Archive That Matters - All The Money - Alter The Mission-  they will share their research as a riff on the well-known urban cash-point, reimagined as a portal to a density of waves, a gravity of lived experience, beyond measure.

ABOUT GEO WYEX
Geo Wyex is an artist and educator originally from NYC who works in music, performance, poetry and sound. His most recent record, ATM FM (2020), was released through Muck Studies Dept. – a constellational narrative framework and imaginary city agent that surveys  the bottom of low-lying water areas, “looking for stars out of what stinks.”  Muck Studies Dept. as a project is a Weltenshaaung, with many forms and formats. Inspired by aesthetics and methodologies of black Atlantic poetics, investigative journalism and storytelling theater, the project connects mud, water, gas, ass, rocks, coins, keys, extractive industry, and sensual expression of belonging to that flood.
Wyex has presented work at MoMA PS1, New Museum, Stedelijk Museum, The Studio Museum in Harlem, Dutch National Opera, L’Arsenic, Joe’s Pub etc. He was a resident at the Rijksakademie in 2015-2016.  Recent collaborators include A.K. Burns, Every Ocean Hughes, Colin Self, and Tourmaline. He is currently based in Rotterdam, NL, and lives next to the Maas River.

ABOUT VIANA AFOUMOU
Viana is a Brussels-born singer-songwriter, writer and artist, currently living in Rotterdam. In 2022, Viana graduated in Liberal Arts and Sciences at Erasmus University College Rotterdam, with a major in Political Philosophy and a minor in African Dynamics. Her academic background influences her practice, which is often intertwined with research and theory. Her voice is her main instrument. She likes jamming, improvising and bending genres – tools to break boundaries. She explores performance in its broader sense: as a conversational tool merging sound, visuals, theatricality and storytelling. Beyond music, she writes poetry, which she distributes through the city via stickers (and sometimes reads out loud), she develops audiovisual projects together with other musicians and filmmakers, she writes blog posts and long essays, and she designs DIY websites. She also bakes bread.

At Roodkapje, she explores the theme “Red Hoods”, combining research, music, poetry, and live interaction with the public, discussing the different meanings of the word Hood, asking questions that shed light to its many socio-political perspectives, exploring the negotiation between the perception of the self and someone’s (perception of) safety in their “hood”. She is interested in (and angry about) the paradoxal codes and etiquettes prescribed to different individuals in the streets..
Between 19 January-28 January 2024 Viana will present "Red Hoods or Mama Always Told Me Not to Run in the Dark" transforming her research in a week long showcase at Roodkapje.

During the Phone Number Release party NDNMK Solutions unsheated a life-changing phone number, promising the key to financial stability in its truest form. Unlike many influencers, healers and religions speaking of magic transformations or by becoming part of their loyal community, Angel Line 1M is different and special. Call (+31)085-025;0225 while simultaneously keeping your calendars open on the 17th of February 2024 for the next step in the Angel Line 1M universe.

ABOUT MAJA SIMIŠIĆ
Maja Simišić is a multimedia artist focusing on everyday battles, and finding ways to turn them on their head, carrying heavy subjects with lightheartedness and humour specific to her character. In her work she overthrows existing gender and class struggles fueled by analysing the expectations put on us by modern societal structures and historical narratives, applying her self developed methodology; the practice of ‘restroying’.

In the Hamburger Community – Test Site, Maja continued to work on her research into the bureaucracy involved in obtaining a (European) visa. As a child and as an adult she has often been involved in visa procedures and therefore she understands the cold reality of these bureaucratic and Kafka-esque procedures, the impact this has on people’s lives. She tackles this serious and frustrating subject in a humorous way in participatory performances in which she uses circus and theater to expose the oppressive systems together with the audience. This year she presented the VISA Reveal Party and The Big Quiz in Roodkapje.

"What's Inside the ATM?" is part of Roodkapje’s Hamburger Community residency program. A 10-month interdisciplinary art laboratory for collaborative practice, collective fun and direct interaction between artists and audience. The trajectory’s main focus is playfulness and creating together. Residents of the Hamburger Community inhabit a shared studio workspace to which they have 24/7 access and follow a program of guidance and mentorships. Roodkapje’s Hamburger Community is made possible with the kind support of Gemeente Rotterdam, Mondriaan Fonds, Stichting Ondernemersbelangen Rotterdam, Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, Stichting Bevordering van Volkskracht, Stichting Elise Mathilde Fonds, Fonds Podiumkunsten
