Lecture: the role of design in societal transitions
Lecture: the role of design in societal transitions
by Design Impact Transition w/ Femke Coops, İdil Gaziulusoy & Derk Loorbach
for fans of: design, arts, culture, societal transitions, change processes, sustainability.
During this event we will explore what role design can play in societal transitions. The world is changing - it is becoming increasingly clear that the way we have currently organised things is unable to cope with systemic and persistent problems. Taking the warnings of the earth seriously, means transformative change is necessary on a massive scale, in a short amount of time. Therefore, new ways of thinking, doing and organising are needed that focus on supporting, facilitating and perhaps even (re)designing, societal transitions towards sustainable, just and resilient futures. In this interactive conversation, we aim to bridge design practices with transitions research, to figure out how the two domains can help each other in accelerating societal transitions.
Femke Coops is a design researcher working at the Design Impact Transition (DIT) Platform and pursuing her PhD at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). In her work, she researches the role of design within complex societal challenges. More specifically, she is currently discovering how the disciplines of design and transition can learn from each other and how we can use this in practice.
İdil Gaziulusoy is Associate Professor of Sustainable Design and leader of the NODUS Sustainable Design Research Group at Aalto University. She develops theories, tools and methods contributing to the theory and practice of design for sustainability transitions.
Derk Loorbach is Professor of Socio-economic Transitions, director of DRIFT and academic lead of the Design Impact Transition (DIT) Platform, at Erasmus University Rotterdam. His work is transdisciplinary and focuses on governance and sustainability transitions.
Femke, İdil and Derk will be joined by practitioners who are active in the field of design and transition, who will share their perspective on the topic.
