With Murphy’s Circus, Brian wants to recapitulate the ‘circus’ of art he grew up in. Artists and musicians of different disciplines will provide the guests with an evening filled with the beauty of creative human expression. Whether it be distraction, entertainment or inspiration you’re looking for, Murphy’s Circus will do its best to deliver the goods.
Not only will there be class musicians joining together onstage (some for a first time collaboration), but we’re also changing the space into an overall creative circus:
- Live visuals on overhead projectors will be made and drawn on the spot by tattoo artist/illustratorJake @weak.boy together with illustrator @mandereine
- Take your blanco clothing for some on site textile illustrations by writer and artist Daniel Pereira Stolle.
- Filmmaker Wijnand Groenen is taking his poloraid camera to create a live photo wall exhibition of the evening and will share some of the pieces with visitors to take home.
- Live music by Vixnde, Damaris, Daniel Clason, Nathan Marcus, Nikos Charalambous and Brian Murhpy
ABOUT DAMARIS
Damaris, a theatrical vocalist who performs instant poetry.
With elements of freestyle, soul music and acting, Damaris combines different disciplines and makes her own definition of what improvisation is.
You will see her dive into her own feelings and emotions, get inspired by the music, the surroundings, the presence of the audience. You will see her use the space and experience the presence of the very moment. You will see her getting lost in her thoughts and then come up with words, ideas, ironic remarks, vocal improvisations. Damaris will let the words float and chase each other, and you will follow the journey of her thoughts flying away and bouncing back to create a story.
Like a freestyler, she follows the stream of her mind.
Like a poet, her words lead her to genuine concepts.
Like an actress, she is completely immersed in the present moment.
Like a vocalist, her voice explores the depth of her emotions.
ABOUT VIXNDE
Viana Afoumou (vixnde) is a Brussels-born singer-songwriter with Belgian and Cameroonian roots. Her style is a mix of Gospel, pop, chanson française, rap, soul, field recording and poetry. Her songs are stories, written both in French and English. Her universe is minimalist and dreamy.
ABOUT BRIAN MURPHY
Brian Murphy is a musician based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Originally from England, Brian writes music from a personal space in an attempt to turn his thoughts and experiences into sound and song. He usually tries to write his songs as spontaneously and honestly as possible, expressing the power of creative outbursts.
Brian Murphy is one of Roodkapje's Significant Others, in 2022 he organised an evening with a focus on deep listening. With Murphy's Circus he is returning to Roodkapje, creating a space for experiment and collaboration.
With Murphy’s Circus, Brian wants to recapitulate the ‘circus’ of art he grew up in. ABOUT NATHAN MARCUS + DANIEL CLASON + NIKOS CHARALAMBOUS
A collaboration of three musicians exploring sounds between the ambient and jazz fields.
Since starting as a freelancer in 2015 Nathan has been involved in many different kinds of projects having to do with sound, visuals, interaction, 3D design and creative technology. Nathan develops anything from interactive art installations, new musical instruments to 3D environments and much more. Everything to do with creating new immersive worlds fascinate him. Whether that is for a immersive theater experiences or an exciting marketing campaign using an interactive installation.
Besides freelance projects, Nathan is also a teacher in Creative System Design at the University of the Arts in Utrecht and is founder and member of the audio-visual collective interbellum
Daniel Clason has been an active presence in the jazz/improvising and electronic music scene, in groups like Nohmi Jazz Quintet, and his own group Daniel Clason 6tet he brings his own perspective to jazz music and beyond. Daniel has worked as an educator and in 2017 he was a guest teacher in Italy for Global Music Foundation’s summer program. He graduated in the conservatory or Rotterdam in 2018 with distinction, and is currently working on an album with his own band DC6tet. Inspirations to his playing are Avishai Cohen, Philip Dizack but also bands like radiohead, kneebody influence his writing as a composer.
Nikos is a guitar player born in Limassol, Cyprus in 1991. He started with guitar around the age of 15 and was mostly self-taught at that time. He initially surrounded himself with rock/metal music, built his own band while composing his own songs and eventually started performing in Rock clubs and festivals around the island. Gradually the musical search moved into jazz and the improvisational aspect of music. In 2013 he enrolled himself in ArtEZ University of the Arts Arnhem where he obtained his Bachelor degree in Jazz & Pop Guitar Performance.
Through this time, besides leading his own groups with original compositions, being a side-man for various projects within jazz, pop and free improvised music he has also performed for dance, film and art productions in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. After completing his Master’s degree on Jazz guitar at Codarts Rotterdam, he continues to compose new material and develop further in his musical journey with various band formations through genres like jazz, blues, rock, funk, pop, latin, free-impro and electronic music.
