A Work in Being
A Work in Being - Don't be shy to be alive.
with De Jeugd, Wijnand Groenen & Daniel Clason, Nathan Marcus, Mathilde Nobel, TOBI
For fans of: Björk, Ramones, living in the moment, Nicolas Jaar, Tim Hecker, trumpets and the survival of social housing.
In this fast-paced world it is sometimes difficult to feel wat actually keeps us on track: existence.
A Work in Being invites the audience to explore the act of 'being', instead of 'progress'.
The artists performing during this evening all have their own way of taking your attention off the grind, hustle and drudge, and on to the moment of 'being'. Coming from different disciplines and genres they will keep you company during this evening with their own particular existence in sound and performance.
MATHILDE NOBEL (dark beat electronics)
Mathilde tries to understand time, as fragmented as it may appear through electronic music combined with dark beat and experimental vocals. The songs often contain dramatic scenes and different timelines with a personal and fragile twist. Where her beats always want to sound deep underground, her melodies are just about to float on the surface, which results into a mix of deconstruction and pop. Chaos is always followed by relief, in which the listener is sucked into a poetic and melodic game. The hidden mythical stories are translated with a contemporary sound where theory and emotion merge
WIJNAND & DANIEL CLASON (alternative silent movie & trumpets)
"Hommage Tweebosbuurt"
Filmmaker Wijnand Groenen joins forces with trumpet player Daniel Clason showing a collage of projected images of buildings in Rotterdam Zuid being demolished and Daniel Clason, playing a live ode to the buildings.
Wijnand Groenen is an ambitious young filmmaker born and raised in Rotterdam. At the age of 15 he grew passionate of photography and filmmaking. Since then he has worked for different cultural institutions including Motel Mozaique and Boijmans van Beuningen. When working on projects, Wijnand likes to combine filmmaking with other art disciplines and practises such as: music, collage, animation, drawing and installations.
NATHAN MARCUS (ambient)
Sounds in time collide with one another in this live ambient electronic set. As part of audio-visual collective interbellum Nathan Marcus will take you on a trip through his way too full hard-drive. Long forgotten ambient snippets will meet freshly recorded field-recordings in a sonic-mashup.
DE JEUGD (punk rock)
A powerful, energetic bunch with flying V guitars and pulsating drums. Punk rock for fun and entertainment.
TOBI
TOBI is a Rotterdam-based DJ and all-round creative. As one half of the EYES WIDE SHUT collective he loves to explore the boundaries of what nightlife can be with little compromise. As a DJ he loves to dig in dusty, second hand record sections to find overlooked and forgotten sounds and to combine them with fresh, comtemporary finds. In his sets every track selected has a meaning, a purpose and a story to tell, but before you know it you lost the common denominator as you drifted off.
Work in Being is an event organised by Brian Murphy. Brian recently graduated from his Bachelor in Musicology and a Work in Being is his debut in organising and programming an event. It is in a time of his life where he seeks new challenges and experiences, or; progression. But in complete honesty, he feels he doesn’t exactly know what he’s doing. For this reason, Brian chose to look at his close surroundings and the artists and friends he has in arm’s length. It was at this point that he realised to make ‘progress’, you must start from what you already have in life.
