In the framework of Lavinia Xausa’s ‘Truly, Madly, Deeply’, Roodkapje invited Know V.A. for a workshop on sampling football chants in Ableton. The workshop is inspired by the artistic work and research into football fanaticism conducted by Xausa, who is a resident at Roodkapje’s Hamburger Community of Art, and who will pull you into the intense world of football supporters in a collective state of worship.

In this workshop you will learn different techniques of sampling with Ableton software, and to create your own track using the chants in the sampling pack we provide. Have a sample you want to work with? Bring it to the workshop!

PRACTICAL INFO
Participants of this workshop will need to bring a laptop & headphones with Ableton installed. Prior knowledge of Ableton is not necessary but highly recommended.

ABOUT KNOW V.A.
Amsterdam-based duo Know V.A. trace ecstatic elements from the hard dance music familiar to their formative experience growing up in Holland. Know V.A. have performed shows across Europe and Asia. They curate the event and club night ‘Strange Days’, which seeks to showcase contemporary hardcore experimentalism and explore how the genre, sonically and visually has remained active in the underground. One of the highlights was the Hard Dance x Strange Days night in collaboration with Boiler Room. Their soundtrack work includes music for Calvin Klein and the 2019 ‘Thunderdome Never Dies’ documentary.

ABOUT LAVINIA XAUSA & TRULY MADLY DEEPLY
Lavinia Xausa is interested in why we as people do what we do to ourselves. When a close relation suddenly converted towards a controversial political position, Xausa started to wonder how individuals today tend to get absorbed into the politics of a crowd. What drives these groups and how do they provide a sense of unity and community that in many ways mimics, or even replaces, religion?
In Truly, Madly, Deeply, Xausa continues her research into these topics by focussing on the experience of die-hard football supporters and hardcore culture, and further explores their aesthetics and characteristics. Every part of Truly, Madly, Deeply is as much anthropology as it is semiotics, and deepens Xausa’s work while culminating into a final project to be shown this December.

ROODKAPJE’S HAMBURGER COMMUNITY
The Hamburger Community programs of Roodkapje provide two yearlong development trajectories for five young, talented artists (Art), and five aspiring event programmers (Live). Throughout the year both the Hamburger Community of Art and Live collectively work towards five interdisciplinary programmes built around the work and research of the individual Hamburger Community artists.
During their stay at Roodkapje the artists and residents will receive guidance and support from professionals from their respective fields, and through an in-depth trajectory that is aimed at further developing their professional skills and positions.
