The Hamburger Community of Art presents ‘Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda’, the first group exhibition with all five of the new residents of Roodkapje’s year long development trajectory for young and emerging artists Daniëlle Hoogendoorn, Rafiq Abbasov, Iriée Zamblé, Lavina Xausa, and Gill Baldwin.
As contemporary artists continue to increasingly profile themselves through social media, young artists are pressured ever more to always show high quality, good, and finished works. With every work being subjected to meticulous documentation, online sharing and archiving, the possibilities to experiment, try out, and fail for the sake of development, are becoming harder and harder to find.
With providing space for self-development (both in and out of the spotlight) as one of the Hamburger Community’s core objectives, ‘Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda’ aims to allow the new residents of the 2020 program to try, test, and exhibit their work(s) in new and daring ways, or to attempt new forms, shapes, and materials in front of the audience of Roodkapje. It is a soft ground for the introduction of the five new artists of the HCA 2020 program to the audience of Roodkapje, and is the first place for the audience to grow familiar with the work of these artists and to start following their development throughout the residency year.
• Mentorship •
During the first month of their residency, the artists received mentoring from Nora Turato, who helped the artists intensively to reflect on their own practice and raised various intriguing topics, such as the contemporary difficulty of building an art career step-by-step in the wake of social media, hypes, and art market speculation.

The Hamburger Community of Art (HCA) is Roodkapje’s year long residency and development trajectory for young and emerging artists, based on the principles of experimentation, collaboration, and developing new artistic practices. What can artists learn from each other? How can (young) artists stimulate their development collectively? And, how can they find new and intriguing ways to connect to diverse audiences?
