the Monstrous Masquerade
20:30-23:00 | free entrance
A confrontation with the monstrous as a tool for unsettling the status quo through storytelling, crafts, performance, and ritual.
The time around the winter solstice is a period of darkness. When the days are short and sunlight is scarce, a horde of spirits, demons and witches, called the wild hunt, roams around the streets at night. Habitually, people gather in the safety of their homes and lock the doors to hide from the haunting hoards. But maybe it is time to confront the monsters? Maybe it is time to get to know our ghosts? Aren’t there valid reasons to haunt and unsettle the heavy silence?
During the longest night of the year, we will speculate on the construction of the monstrous in relation to dominant culture, as a personification of fear, desire, anxiety, and fantasy. Monsters appear at a time of crisis. They come creeping out of the fissures of a rotten system to reveal its relativity, its fragility, its mortality. Through conversations, storytelling, and physical exercises we will wonder who these monsters are and where their power comes from. By creating masks we come to embody these dreadful creatures that unsettle (or reveal?) the status quo and reclaim the streets in a terrifying parade.
