Accidental collages of perfume ads, party announcements, missing cats: Pasted posters are the city’s wallpaper. For the Happening ‘Paste’, Roodkapje embraces the serendipity of street montages and turns their space into a collaborative collage.

In April 2024 independent publishing house Hocus Bogus Publishing returns to Roodkapje's art residency, the Hamburger Community. Jefe the friendly Riso Printer will be wheeled to our exhibition space once more for a sticky meeting of creative forces. Using the riso printing technique, the new Hamburger Community residents transform each-others prints by adding transparent image layers. The unexpected outcomes are pasted all over Roodkapje’s walls, mirroring the plaster of the city. Participate in an artistic relay, where layers can be printed on posters and pasted to the growing collage on the walls. Don’t know how to work with Jefe? Surveillance cameras watching you, your each and every step. Billboards creating artificial desires, manufacturing demand, screaming, whispering, purring: consume! High-rise towers, luscious lofts owned by millionaires in faraway countries. Hostile architecture stripping the city’s unsheltered of their right to rest.
Aggressively-lit supermarkets selling products that fuel genocide. Cops patrolling the streets, deciding which lives are worthy of protection and which aren’t.

What if the city were a playground for our imagination? What if we could rewrite the language of its walls? Disrupt the city’s imaginaries of control and obedience? Unmask its violence? What would the city look like if it truly responded to the needs of its inhabitants? What does the unruly, collective, freedom-hungry spirit under the city’s pavement dream of at night?

Join us in lending a voice to its liberatory desires with the help of Jefé the Riso printer, scissors, tapes, pens, and glue, while listening to Many Voices unified in issuing collective demands, sounding through the city’s streets. Come reimagine, copy, and paste with us. Cut with critical scissors dissecting capitalist propaganda.
Yell with angry pens proclaiming truths. Connect with tender tape restoring what was broken. Tune in to dissident voices reshaping urban space.

The Hamburger Community residents invite sound(scape) artist/sonic journalist Josué Amador to join in on the Happening. In sound map archives Josué documents and amplifies expressions of city life. With his current protest project he questions how we can reshape spaces through sound and in moments where cities are behaving oppositely to what they are supposed to.

HAMBURGER COMMUNITY
‘Paste’ is the first Happening with Roodkapje’s Hamburger Community of 2024. Roodkapje’s Hamburger Community residency program is a year long interdisciplinary art laboratory for collaborative practice, collective fun and direct interaction between artists and audience, from 2024 we focus on The Happening as an art form.

HAPPENINGS AND ANARCHIVE
The wallpaper created during ‘Paste’ will not be removed after the Happening and is the first layer of Roodkapje’s Anarchive. Roodkapje starts their Anarchive in 2024 working together with makers outside of the Hamburger Community, transforming the spirit of the Happenings into suggestions for new beginnings, relations and ways of being. The anarchive is a proposition to break free from the archive, to refuse known forms of archiving and include the full sensorial experience of lived life. Roodkapje aims to collect moments, processes and affective forces in the Happenings to craft stories about what has passed in ways that may inspire possible action in the future.

HOCUS BOGUS PUBLISHING
Hocus Bogus Publishing is a small press publishing house started by artist and printmaker Dennis Muñoz Espadiña. Since its inception in 2015 it has served as a platform for young artists and visual creators from the Netherlands and beyond. Frequently produced by the artists themselves in small and limited runs, these publications are filled with idiosyncratic words and images, radiating radical tender energies throughout. By showcasing and sharing these personal publications with a wider audience, HBP hopes to share the wonderful world of small press printed matter. Since 2022 Hocus Bogus Publishing has set up a Risograph printing studio in Roodkapje, an experimental art/music/food space in the heart of Rotterdam. From here we cut,paste, print and bind publications as well as give printing workshops and organize events.
